This was the cover of our wedding invitation, lo, these 21+ years ago!
When I was 6, my father was stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. First off, let me just say that Hawaii is a GREAT place to grow up! I got most if not all of my open-mindedness trying new and very different foods and being introduced to a lot of different cultures there. At any rate, the very first art classes that I took was a public broadcasting series on Sumi-e, or Japanese ink painting. I asked my parents for a painting set, which they got for me, and which I still have and use (it's one of my personal treasures, in fact).
Since my wife and I were studying and researching medieval Japanese culture at the time, we decided to go with a traditional Japanese illustration. Since the printing process was a bit expensive for us to render the subtle washes of sumi-e, I drew the design in rapidograph and added the wash with zipatone. Yeah, it looks like a lot of really lame dots right now, but at the time, it was pretty impressive.
Very nice. I really enjoy Sumi-e painting, but I suck at it so I digitized it, lol. I love the halftone pattern, I never thought of doing that. hmmm...
Very nice I have always been fascinated with Sumi-e painting and I've recently decided to get into it. Now I am just trying to find some tutorials or resources to help me out a bit. Any suggestions?
Lovely story and a really nic picture. Even when I was very little (5 or so) I know I had a fondness for some sumi-e I found in our family library and their simplicity and emotion...
